Thirteen years ago I set out with my wife and young daughter to find Thailand's last remaining ruby mine: In most buildings, 13 is so cursed they skip that floor and, perhaps not coincidentally, childhood dies at that age. One may be the loneliest number, but thirteen is something else again.
